UN: Over 50,000 Syrians return home in last 3 weeks

The UN announced Thursday that over 50,000 Syrian refugees have returned home from neighboring countries in the three weeks following the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi shared on X that the return of Syrians is gradually increasing, but emphasized that conditions inside Syria remain grim. He called for more humanitarian and recovery aid to support both returnees and others in need.

Assad, who had ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime forces seized control of Damascus on December 8, effectively ending the Baath Party’s long-standing rule. This shift in power came after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) fighters rapidly captured key cities in a swift offensive lasting less than two weeks.
