United Nations Security Council backs statement on Doha attack with US support
UNITED NATIONS – The United Nations Security Council on Thursday condemned the strikes on Qatar’s capital, Doha, in a rare show of unity. All 15 members, including the United States, supported the statement. Israel was not directly named, but diplomats confirmed it carried out the attack.
The strikes on Tuesday targeted senior Hamas leaders and sharply escalated Israel’s military campaign. The United States, long known for protecting Israel at the UN, called the operation a unilateral step that did not serve either US or Israeli interests.
Washington’s support for the statement surprised many observers. President Donald Trump signaled clear frustration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to authorize the attack, breaking from the usual US practice of shielding Israel from criticism.
The joint text, drafted by Britain and France, urged calm and solidarity with Qatar. “Council members underscored the importance of de-escalation and expressed their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar,” the statement said.
The timing of the attack was especially sensitive. Qatar has been hosting and mediating talks aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza. The Council stressed that freeing hostages and ending the suffering of civilians must remain global priorities.
Later on Thursday, the Security Council will meet again to discuss the strikes. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani is expected to take part in the session.
