WASHINGTON: The United States has accused Cuba of orchestrating a long-running espionage campaign aimed at penetrating key American institutions, alleging that Havana successfully infiltrated senior levels of the US government over several decades.
In a report released by the US Department of State on Monday, officials claimed that the Cuban government has pursued a sustained strategy of intelligence gathering and political influence against the United States for nearly 70 years.
According to the report, Cuba allegedly developed a sophisticated network focused on espionage, covert operations, infiltration, sabotage, and proxy organizations to advance its strategic interests. US officials argued that these efforts were designed to weaken American institutions and influence political and social movements from within.
The State Department described the alleged campaign as one of the most significant and enduring foreign intelligence operations targeting the United States, asserting that Cuban intelligence cultivated contacts across multiple generations while expanding its covert activities over time.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also highlighted the findings on social media, saying the newly released report sheds light on what he described as the extensive history of Cuban espionage and subversive activities inside the United States.
The allegations represent the latest escalation in tensions between Washington and Havana. Cuban authorities had not immediately responded publicly to the report at the time of publication.
