US Backs Talks With Iran but Vows Accountability

US Keeps Iran Diplomacy Open While Warning of Consequences

US Reaffirms Diplomatic Path With Iran While Warning Against Further Escalation

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 10, 2026 — The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving concerns over Iran’s nuclear program through diplomacy while cautioning that Tehran will face consequences if it continues actions deemed harmful to international peace and security.

Addressing a United Nations Security Council meeting on Friday, US Deputy Representative to the UN Tammy Bruce said recent negotiations had produced progress following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. She described diplomacy as Washington’s preferred approach but emphasized that meaningful talks require Iran to fulfill its international commitments.

Bruce expressed hope that Tehran would return to compliance with its obligations and engage constructively in negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive and lasting agreement. She added that dialogue remains possible only if Iran demonstrates a genuine commitment to honoring its responsibilities.

Her remarks followed comments by US President Donald Trump, who said Iran had requested the continuation of negotiations and that Washington had agreed to resume discussions. Trump also stated on Truth Social that the ceasefire reached between the two countries last month was no longer in effect.

The US official warned that continued violations of international obligations would undermine diplomatic efforts and said Washington was prepared to hold Iran accountable for actions that threaten regional and global security. She further stressed that attacks targeting civilians or commercial shipping would prompt a US response.

Tensions between the two countries have intensified despite the memorandum brokered by Pakistan in mid-June, which sought to reduce hostilities and lay the groundwork for a long-term peace agreement. Recent military exchanges have included reported Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and retaliatory strikes involving US military facilities in the Gulf region, raising fresh concerns over stability in the Middle East.
