Spain Opens Probe Into Israeli Officials Over Gaza Flotilla

Spanish Court Investigates Israeli Military Over Flotilla Raid

Spanish Court Launches Investigation Into Israeli Military Officials Over Gaza Flotilla Incident

MADRID, July 10, 2026 — Spain’s National Court has opened a judicial investigation into senior Israeli military officials over the interception of a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza, focusing on alleged incidents involving vessels sailing under the Spanish flag.

According to Spanish media reports, Judge Francisco de Jorge accepted legal complaints submitted by the Communist Party of Spain, United Left Federal, and several activists. The investigation names Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and Israeli Navy Commander Ram Rothberg in connection with the operation.

The case stems from the interception of the Global Sumud flotilla on October 1 while it was transporting humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Court documents cited in the report allege that Israeli forces boarded multiple vessels in international waters, including Spanish-flagged ships, and took control of them by force.

The complaints further claim that crew members and activists, including Spanish nationals, were unlawfully detained, their property was damaged, and some detainees were later transferred to Ketziot Prison in Israel, where they allegedly faced mistreatment and were denied adequate legal and diplomatic assistance.

As part of the proceedings, Judge de Jorge has requested clarification from the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on whether the allegations fall within the scope of the ICC’s ongoing investigations concerning the Palestinian territories or whether the Spanish case can proceed independently without creating jurisdictional conflicts.

The investigation remains in its preliminary stage, and Israeli authorities had not publicly commented on the reported legal action at the time of publication.
