The year 2024 saw the United States dominate the global basketball stage, claiming both Olympic gold medals in men’s and women’s basketball at the Paris Olympics. The US men’s team, featuring stars like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant, triumphed over host France 98-87, marking their fifth consecutive Olympic victory and 17th gold overall. The women’s team also secured gold, edging out France 67-66 to win their eighth straight Olympic title and tenth overall.
In the NBA, the Boston Celtics ended a 16-year championship drought, defeating the Dallas Mavericks 4-1 in the finals to capture their 18th title, surpassing the Los Angeles Lakers for the most championships in league history.
On the WNBA front, the New York Liberty made history, clinching their first-ever championship with a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Lynx.
In European club basketball, Turkish head coach Ergin Ataman guided Panathinaikos to the EuroLeague title, ending a 13-year championship gap for the Greek team and marking his third EuroLeague victory. Fenerbahce’s women’s team also dominated, winning their second consecutive FIBA EuroLeague title with a 109-52 victory over ASVEL.
Other European triumphs included Paris Basketball winning the BKT European Cup, Unicaja Malaga claiming the Champions League, and Niners Chemnitz taking the FIBA Europe Cup. In women’s basketball, London Lions triumphed in the FIBA Europe Cup, defeating Besiktas.
