US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov on Monday to discuss the possibility of reaching a settlement to the war in Ukraine, according to US media reports.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the G20 finance ministers gathering in Asheville, North Carolina. Reports said Bessent promoted US President Donald Trump’s 28-point peace proposal during the discussions.
NBC News reported that the two officials also exchanged views on economic growth, although details about the full agenda were not immediately disclosed.
Neither the US nor Russian governments released an official account of the meeting or provided further information about the discussions.
A US Treasury official told CNBC that Bessent is expected to conduct at least 11 bilateral meetings during the week-long gathering.
His scheduled meetings include representatives from China, Japan, South Korea and Canada, several of which have recently been involved in trade disagreements with the United States.
