US Senate Approves Key Spending Bill to Prevent Shutdown

WASHINGTON: The US Senate passed crucial legislation early Saturday to fund the government until March 14, averting a potential shutdown. The bill now heads to President Joe Biden for final approval.

The legislation, supported by both parties, mirrors a similar vote in the House of Representatives. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised the bill, emphasizing that it would keep the government open, aid disaster-stricken areas, and support American farmers. It includes $10 billion for agriculture and $100 billion for disaster relief.

While some provisions, like funding for pediatric cancer research and a crackdown on “junk fees,” were removed, they were passed separately in other measures. The bill also sidestepped a contentious demand to lift the debt ceiling, which led to divisions within the Republican Party earlier in the week.

The White House confirmed President Biden will sign the bill, ensuring federal agencies remain funded and operational.
