Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh announced today that U.S. and Ukrainian defense officials have been in discussions regarding the recent Ukrainian attack on Russia’s Kursk province and the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. During the talks, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov focused on Ukraine’s strategic objectives.
Singh highlighted that despite the current offensive towards Kursk, there has been no change in the types of weapons the coalition supporting Ukraine is providing. However, she noted that since the Russian invasion in February 2022, the nature of military aid has evolved significantly. Initially, the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, comprising over 50 nations, provided basic anti-armor and anti-aircraft weaponry. As the conflict has progressed, this support has expanded to include F-16 fighter jets, advanced infantry training, and modern tanks such as German Leopards and U.S. Abrams.
Singh pointed out that the ongoing Ukrainian offensive in Russia may be causing a shift in Russian military focus, drawing forces away from their efforts in Ukraine’s eastern provinces. While early reports indicate some Russian units are being redirected towards Kursk, the exact numbers and objectives remain unclear.
U.S. officials continue to observe Ukraine’s effectiveness on the battlefield, with Ukrainian forces successfully reclaiming previously occupied territories. Despite concerns over potential escalation between Russia and Ukraine, Singh emphasized that the U.S. remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its fight to restore its sovereignty.
In other developments, Singh mentioned that U.S. deterrence forces are being deployed in the Middle East, with F-22 Raptor aircraft and the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group being positioned to support U.S. Central Command. This move comes amid increased tensions in the region, particularly involving Iran and its proxies. The U.S. government is also focused on facilitating a cease-fire in Gaza to help de-escalate the situation and bring hostages home.
Singh warned Iran against further aggression, recalling an incident in April where the U.S. and its allies successfully intercepted 90% of drones and missiles launched by Iran towards Israel. She underscored the U.S. commitment to protecting its allies and maintaining stability in the region.–News Desk
