Xi Vows Taiwan Unification Is Unstoppable

Xi Jinping Asserts Taiwan Unification Is Inevitable

Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to unifying Taiwan with the mainland, declaring in a New Year’s address that “no one can stop” the historical momentum of reunification.

Beijing considers Taiwan, a self-governed democracy, an integral part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to assert control. The rhetoric follows a series of escalating pressures, including three major military drills since Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te assumed office in May. The most recent exercises, described by Taiwanese officials as the largest in years, showcased China’s military resolve, though Beijing has remained tight-lipped about the maneuvers.

“Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family,” Xi proclaimed during a state-broadcast speech. “No one can sever our blood ties, and no one can halt the tide of history.”

Xi’s remarks come amid heightened tensions with the United States, Taiwan’s key ally and top arms supplier. Although Washington maintains no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, its strategic partnership with the island remains a cornerstone of regional geopolitics.

The stakes may rise further as Donald Trump, who has pledged to take a tougher stance on China’s trade practices, prepares to assume the US presidency on January 20. With Xi’s bold declarations and Trump’s expected trade policies, the already strained US-China relationship could face turbulent waters ahead.
