China’s ongoing purge of top military officials, including the suspension of Admiral Miao Hua, reflects President Xi Jinping’s emphasis on loyalty and control within the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Miao, a senior member of the PLA and a key figure in ensuring ideological conformity and senior personnel promotions, is the latest high-ranking officer to be removed, following a trend of purges under Xi’s leadership.
The move highlights Xi’s determination to reshape the PLA according to his political agenda, reinforcing his control over the military and signaling his intent to maintain a combat-ready force, particularly for potential conflicts such as Taiwan. While China has made significant strides in military production and weapon systems, Xi’s purges aim to address systemic corruption and ensure a streamlined, effective command structure.
The PLA’s modernization efforts focus on integrating new military technologies, such as AI and cyber warfare, and restructuring branches for a more unified strategy. However, these reforms come with risks. The instability caused by leadership purges could damage the PLA’s credibility, raising concerns about its command structure and discipline. This may lead adversaries to question the PLA’s effectiveness and increase the risk of conflict, especially in regional disputes with the US and allies over Taiwan and the South China Sea.
Despite the risks, Xi’s goal of creating a politically aligned and less corrupt military force that is capable of confronting the US in a potential regional conflict remains his priority. However, this approach risks undermining the PLA’s credibility and effectiveness on the global stage.
