Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Navy Adm. Christopher W. Grady, emphasized the critical role of international cooperation in the defense industrial base during his speech at a National Defense Industrial Association event on emerging technologies today. Adm. Grady stressed that the strength of the Defense Department and global security relies on collaboration with allies, partners, industry, and academia.
Adm. Grady underscored that there is only one defense industrial base, which is inherently international. He illustrated this with the example of the coordinated efforts of around 50 allied and partner nations that have been regularly supplying defensive arms to Ukraine following Russia’s illegal invasion. Each nation contributes its unique capabilities, with Latvia, for instance, being noted for its expertise in drone manufacturing.
The admiral also mentioned the establishment of a combined joint requirements oversight council with international partners, aimed at leveraging the industrial strengths of each nation more effectively.
On the U.S. front, Adm. Grady highlighted the importance of speed in developing and deploying critical technologies, praising the Defense Innovation Unit and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for their success in accelerating timelines. He called for greater transparency in the Defense Department’s requirements, especially to assist small businesses and startups that may struggle with the complexities of the defense bureaucracy.
Adm. Grady also addressed the need for improved talent management, suggesting more flexible recruitment approaches for cyber talent and creating pathways for industry professionals to temporarily work within the department before returning to the private sector. He concluded by noting that the U.S.’s superpower status is not only due to its advanced weaponry and skilled workforce but also its robust infrastructure, training, testing facilities, and other critical assets.–News Desk
