On Monday, September 9, 2024, Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Celeste Wallander and Cypriot Minister of Defense Vasilis Palmas signed the U.S.-Republic of Cyprus (ROC) Roadmap for Bilateral Defense Cooperation in Nicosia. This agreement sets the strategic direction for the U.S.-Cyprus defense partnership over the next five years and strengthens their mutual commitment to stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The roadmap builds on discussions held during the U.S.-ROC Defense and Security Cooperation Dialogue in Washington last June, marking a significant step forward in enhancing defense ties between the two nations. The agreement outlines key priorities for defense cooperation, including regional stability, crisis response, and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
During her visit, which spanned September 9-10, Assistant Secretary Wallander also held discussions with ROC President Nikos Christodoulides. She expressed appreciation for Cyprus’ leadership in providing regional humanitarian aid and supporting citizens in crisis throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. Wallander also visited the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Larnaca, where she commended the ROC’s contributions to crisis management and humanitarian efforts in the region.–News Desk
