The UN human rights office has called for COP29 to secure climate finance in the trillions, rather than billions, to meet the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Spokesperson Jeremy Laurence stressed that the wealthier nations, who have historically contributed most to climate change, must provide more funding. At the same time, the most affected countries need financial support to build resilience and access effective remedies. Laurence also expressed concern over the lack of progress on crucial issues and the potential rollback of human rights agreements at COP29.
