China Conducts Live-Fire Drills Near Taiwan, Simulating Strategic Strikes
Beijing has escalated military activities around Taiwan, launching a live-fire exercise in the Taiwan Strait to simulate attacks on critical ports and energy facilities, according to an official military statement on Wednesday.
Codenamed “Strait Thunder,” the latest drill builds on exercises conducted a day earlier, reinforcing China’s claim over the self-governing island, which it considers part of its territory.
Taiwan’s presidential office strongly condemned the military maneuvers, calling them “provocative actions” that have become increasingly frequent amid deteriorating cross-strait relations.
The heightened military activity follows sharp criticism from Beijing against Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, whom China has labeled a “parasite” and “separatist.” Earlier this month, Lai referred to China as a “foreign hostile force,” further fueling tensions in the region.
