21 Nigerian Athletes Killed in Devastating Highway Bus Crash
ABUJA:
A tragic road accident in Nigeria claimed the lives of 21 athletes on Saturday as their bus crashed while returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival held in Ogun State. The athletes were en route to Kano, in northern Nigeria, following a lengthy journey of nearly 1,000 kilometres (620 miles).
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the fatal crash occurred in the afternoon and involved no other vehicles. Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was likely caused by driver fatigue or excessive speed, both common risks during long overnight drives.
Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. The incident has sparked nationwide mourning and renewed calls for improved safety standards in long-distance transport, especially for athletes and delegations traveling for national events.
