Zelensky Signals Shift Toward Demilitarised Zones in New Peace Proposal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signalled a shift in Kyiv’s approach to ending the war by proposing the creation of demilitarised zones as part of a revised peace plan.
The proposal reflects a cautious move toward de-escalation while Ukraine continues to push for security guarantees and the protection of its sovereignty. Officials say the plan aims to reduce active fighting along contested areas without conceding territorial claims.
Focus on Reducing Frontline Tensions
Under the proposal, designated areas would restrict military activity to prevent further clashes. Ukrainian officials argue that such zones could lower civilian casualties and create space for diplomatic engagement.
At the same time, Kyiv has stressed that any demilitarisation would require international monitoring and firm guarantees to prevent violations. Ukrainian leaders remain wary of past ceasefire breaches.
Balancing Peace Efforts and Security Concerns
Zelensky has repeatedly stated that Ukraine seeks a just and lasting peace rather than a temporary pause in fighting. Therefore, the proposal links demilitarised zones with broader conditions, including accountability, reconstruction support, and long-term security arrangements.
Western allies have welcomed discussions aimed at reducing violence. However, they continue to emphasise that any settlement must respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and international law.
Uncertain Response from Moscow
Russia has not formally responded to the latest proposal. Previous negotiations have stalled amid deep mistrust between the two sides and ongoing military operations.
Despite the uncertainty, Ukrainian officials say the plan demonstrates Kyiv’s willingness to explore diplomatic options while defending national interests.
