EU Warns of Response After US Imposes Travel Bans on Five Europeans
The European Union has warned it may take action after the United States imposed travel restrictions on five European figures accused of promoting censorship of American viewpoints.
A spokesperson for the European Commission said the bloc strongly condemns the US decision. The spokesperson emphasised that freedom of expression remains a fundamental right in Europe and a shared democratic value with the United States.
Brussels Rejects Censorship Claims
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the individuals as “radical” activists. He claimed they supported foreign censorship efforts that targeted Americans and US-based technology companies, warning of possible negative consequences for US foreign policy.
However, EU officials rejected these accusations. They stressed that European digital rules aim to protect users, promote transparency, and ensure fair competition rather than suppress free speech.
Breton Among Those Targeted
The list includes Thierry Breton, the EU commissioner responsible for overseeing social media regulation. Breton previously served as France’s finance minister and has played a key role in shaping Europe’s digital policy.
Last year, he publicly clashed with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk over plans to broadcast an online interview with Donald Trump ahead of the US election. That dispute drew international attention and highlighted growing tensions over content moderation.
Civil Society Leaders Also Affected
The other individuals affected by the US ban include Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate, Josephine Ballon and Anna-Lena von Hodenberg of Germany’s HateAid organisation, and Clare Melford, head of the Global Disinformation Index.
European officials argue that these figures work to counter online harm and disinformation, not to silence political views.
Calls for Dialogue Amid Rising Tensions
Despite the strong criticism, the European Commission urged dialogue to prevent further escalation. It underlined the importance of protecting democratic values while maintaining stable transatlantic relations.
The dispute reflects wider tensions between the EU and the US over how governments should regulate powerful technology firms without undermining freedom of expression.
