Protests Erupt Outside Texas Detention Centre Holding Minneapolis Child
DILLEY, TEXAS — Protesters and elected officials gathered outside a Texas immigration detention facility on Wednesday, where a young child and his father remain in custody following their arrest in Minnesota last week.
Demonstrators briefly clashed with state troopers as tensions escalated outside the centre.
Arrest in Minnesota Sparks Outcry
Immigration officers detained five-year-old Liam Ramos and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, in Minneapolis on 20 January. Authorities later transferred them to a detention facility in Dilley, Texas.
Since their relocation, the case has drawn national attention, particularly due to the child’s age and the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
Lawmakers Demand Release
Several state and federal lawmakers visited the facility on Wednesday. During the visit, they publicly criticized the detention and urged the Trump administration to release both the child and his father.
Lawmakers described the situation as inhumane and called for changes to immigration enforcement practices involving minors.
Conflicting Accounts Over Immigration Status
The Department of Homeland Security stated that the father and son entered the United States illegally. However, the family’s attorney disputed that claim, saying they followed legal procedures to seek asylum.
The disagreement has added to broader debates over immigration policy and the treatment of families in detention.
Growing Public Pressure
Protesters continued to gather outside the facility, demanding accountability and calling for the immediate reunification of the family. Advocacy groups say the case highlights ongoing concerns about the detention of children under federal immigration enforcement.
