The United States is applying its influence selectively in ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Syria and Israel, according to US Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack.
Speaking at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Barrack said Washington intervenes when it deems necessary, reflecting a broader strategy shaped by US President Donald Trump. He described the approach as one rooted in diplomatic balance, supported by principles of strength and economic stability.
Barrack emphasized that regional actors should take primary responsibility for resolving their own conflicts, while the US remains engaged where its involvement can make a difference.
His comments followed recent remarks by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who indicated that negotiations with Israel remain active but face significant obstacles. According to Sharaa, progress has been slow due to Israel’s insistence on maintaining a presence within Syrian territory.
Barrack acknowledged the complexities of the process, noting that discussions are ongoing but challenging, without providing further details on the points of contention.
Despite the difficulties, he expressed cautious optimism about Syria’s future trajectory, suggesting that diplomatic efforts, though strained, continue to move forward.
