Erdogan Stresses Role Of Regional Powers In Peace Efforts

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has underscored the importance of involving key regional players in any effort to achieve lasting peace and security, warning that exclusionary approaches are unlikely to succeed.

Speaking at a dinner marking the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Istanbul, Erdogan said sustainable solutions require the participation of principal regional actors. He emphasized that Türkiye’s foreign policy prioritizes diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution, guided by humanitarian principles.

Erdogan also criticized the current global order, arguing that the system established after World War II is facing a deep legitimacy crisis. He said international law is increasingly ineffective in preventing war crimes, cautioning that a world driven by military force rather than dialogue leaves no country secure.

Addressing developments in the Middle East, Erdogan said global attention has recently shifted toward tensions involving Iran, while violence in Palestine and Lebanon continues to cause widespread casualties and displacement. He accused Israel’s government of undermining regional stability and called for stronger international parliamentary responses to measures targeting Palestinians.

Reiterating Türkiye’s long-standing position, Erdogan said a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace in Palestine. He urged lawmakers worldwide to support efforts toward that goal.

He further alleged that Israeli forces have continued operations despite previous ceasefire agreements, contributing to rising casualties in Gaza. Erdogan also criticized restrictions on humanitarian aid and policies affecting Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Palestinian prisoners, warning such actions could lead to conditions resembling apartheid.

Turning to other regions, Erdogan highlighted the need for sustained international support to rebuild Syria while preserving its territorial integrity. He said Türkiye remains actively engaged in promoting stability in Libya and continues diplomatic efforts to help end the war in Ukraine, where it maintains a mediating role.

He also welcomed progress toward peace in the South Caucasus and reiterated calls for a fair resolution in Cyprus, including ending the isolation of Turkish Cypriots.

On Africa, Erdogan said Türkiye’s engagement is expanding through partnerships based on equality. He expressed concern over ongoing instability in Sudan and reaffirmed support for diplomatic solutions. He also welcomed easing tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia, noting their importance for stability in the Horn of Africa.

Erdogan concluded by stressing that ensuring long-term security and prosperity across Africa, including the Sahel region, remains a shared priority, with Türkiye committed to continued cooperation.
