Khalilur Rahman Wins United Nations General Assembly Presidency

UN Assembly Elects New President Amid Global Crisis Challenges

Khalilur Rahman has been elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, with his tenure scheduled to begin in September and continue for one year.

The election involved 190 votes, with Rahman securing 99 ballots, narrowly defeating his competitor representing the Greek Cypriot Administration, who received 91 votes. The result highlights a closely fought contest for a key global diplomatic position.

Outgoing Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, former Foreign Minister of Germany, congratulated Rahman and stressed that the role has become increasingly complex, extending beyond procedural duties due to rising global challenges affecting the UN system.

She noted that the upcoming session will face significant international pressures, while expressing confidence in Rahman’s extensive diplomatic background and his ability to manage multilateral negotiations effectively.

In his acceptance speech, Rahman drew attention to escalating global instability, including armed conflicts and humanitarian crises that continue to threaten international peace and security. He also warned that declining trust in global institutions must be urgently addressed through coordinated international efforts.

Rahman pledged to focus on conflict prevention, peaceful resolution of disputes, stronger peacebuilding mechanisms, and protection of civilians. He further emphasized inclusive diplomacy and the importance of expanding the role of women in peacekeeping and global decision-making processes.
