EU Chief Welcomes Israel Lebanon Ceasefire Move

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has welcomed the announcement of a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, while emphasizing the need for a long-term political solution.

In a statement shared on X, von der Leyen described the US-mediated truce as a positive development, noting that it offers temporary relief following significant human losses caused by the conflict.

However, she stressed that a short-term halt in fighting is not sufficient, calling instead for sustained efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region. She reiterated the European Union’s position on upholding Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Von der Leyen also confirmed that the EU will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Lebanon, underlining its ongoing commitment to support civilians affected by the crisis.

The ceasefire was announced earlier by US President Donald Trump, who said both Israel and Lebanon had agreed to halt hostilities starting at 2100 GMT. The agreement follows diplomatic talks held in Washington earlier this week.

Hezbollah was not part of the negotiations and has rejected the ceasefire arrangement.
