US Senator Chris Van Hollen has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take concrete measures to protect Christian communities, criticizing what he described as a pattern of violence and intimidation that goes beyond isolated incidents.
In a video message shared on social media, Van Hollen referred to Netanyahu’s recent remarks expressing sadness over footage showing an Israeli soldier damaging a statue of Jesus Christ during military operations in southern Lebanon. While Israel’s military acknowledged the incident, the senator questioned whether similar concern is applied to broader issues affecting Christian populations.
Van Hollen highlighted ongoing pressures in Jerusalem and alleged attacks by settlers on Christian communities in the occupied West Bank, particularly the village of Taybeh. Drawing on his visit to the area last year, he said residents had faced violence that, in some cases, was not effectively prevented by Israeli forces.
The senator called for stronger action from the Israeli leadership, arguing that expressions of regret are insufficient without meaningful steps to address the situation on the ground. He emphasized the need for accountability and protection for vulnerable communities facing repeated threats.
Netanyahu had earlier condemned the incident involving the damaged religious symbol, stating that Israel respects all faiths. However, Van Hollen maintained that broader measures are required to ensure the safety of Christian communities across the region.
