India Strengthens Energy Partnership Amid Hormuz Crisis

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said India is strengthening energy cooperation with the United States to secure stable and affordable energy supplies for its growing population. The remarks came after bilateral talks in New Delhi with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

During a joint press conference, Jaishankar stressed that ensuring accessible and cost-effective energy remains a top priority for India’s 1.4 billion citizens. He welcomed the recent expansion of India-US energy trade, highlighting diversified supply chains as a key pillar of national energy security.

The discussions took place amid renewed tensions in global energy markets linked to disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for oil shipments. Jaishankar emphasized India’s support for safe and uninterrupted maritime commerce through the region, warning that restrictions could negatively affect global markets and major energy-importing nations.

India, which previously halted Iranian oil imports in 2019 due to US sanctions, resumed purchases this year after Washington granted a waiver amid ongoing regional tensions involving Tehran. The South Asian nation remains heavily dependent on Middle Eastern energy supplies, making stability in the Gulf strategically important.

Jaishankar also noted that India seeks lower global energy prices and broader market access while balancing relationships with multiple international partners, including Russia, Europe, Ukraine, and the United States.

Rubio stated that Washington and New Delhi were progressing toward a sustainable trade agreement designed to benefit both countries and support shared strategic interests. He also described India as one of America’s most important global partners.

The Indian minister additionally raised concerns regarding visa challenges faced by legitimate Indian travelers. Responding to questions about alleged racist remarks targeting Indians in the US, Rubio acknowledged that offensive comments can emerge in any society but described the United States as a welcoming nation strengthened by immigration.
