The United States has warned that any breach of restrictions on Iranian maritime routes will not be accepted, as tensions escalate over naval operations in the Gulf region. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conveyed this position during a conversation with India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar amid growing diplomatic friction.
According to a statement from the US State Department, Rubio emphasized that all commercial shipping must comply with directives issued by US forces operating in the Strait of Hormuz, aimed at maintaining regional security. He further stated that violations of restrictions linked to Iranian oil transportation would face strict consequences.
The discussion comes after India formally raised concerns over recent US military actions in the Gulf. Jaishankar reportedly protested strikes on vessels that resulted in the deaths of three Indian nationals, describing the actions as unjustified and expressing strong objections through diplomatic channels, including a formal protest lodged in New Delhi.
The Indian government has summoned senior US diplomatic representatives twice within a week in response to the incidents, highlighting rising tensions between the two countries over maritime enforcement operations.
US Central Command has stated that several tankers flagged under different nations were disabled this week for allegedly attempting to transport Iranian oil in violation of sanctions enforcement measures.
