Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s support for dialogue and diplomacy during a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Middle East.
According to a statement from the Indian Prime Minister’s Office, Pezeshkian briefed Modi on the latest developments in the region and outlined the current diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions.
Modi welcomed the recent understanding reached between Iran and the United States, reiterating India’s longstanding position that international disputes should be resolved through peaceful negotiations rather than confrontation.
The Indian leader also stressed the need for sustained efforts to secure lasting regional stability while ensuring the protection of international trade routes and freedom of navigation, both of which remain critical to global commerce and energy security.
The conversation comes after a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran took effect on June 18 following electronic signatures by President Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump. The agreement, facilitated through Pakistani mediation, establishes a framework for negotiations covering a ceasefire, sanctions relief, Iran’s nuclear program, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and broader regional security issues.
India has consistently advocated diplomatic engagement in regional conflicts, reflecting its strategic interest in maintaining stability in the Gulf, a region vital to its energy imports and trade.
