Canada to Welcome 2028 Francophonie Summit in Ottawa-Gatineau
OTTAWA — Canada has been selected to host the 2028 Francophonie Summit, with the event set to take place in the National Capital Region, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced during Canada’s Independence Day celebrations.
Speaking in French near Parliament Hill, Carney said the summit will provide an opportunity to showcase the strength, diversity and global influence of the French language while welcoming leaders from across the Francophone world to Canada.
The biennial gathering will be held across the Ottawa-Gatineau region, bringing together heads of state and government from member countries of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF). The summit serves as a key platform for discussions on issues including democracy, education, sustainable development, environmental cooperation and the promotion of the French language.
The Francophonie unites countries and regional governments with French-speaking populations or historic ties to France. Alongside Canada, Quebec and New Brunswick are full members, while Ontario and Nova Scotia participate as observers. The organization also includes numerous African nations, as well as countries such as Cambodia, Armenia and Egypt.
In addition to advancing cooperation among French-speaking nations, the summit offers world leaders an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic and economic partnerships across multiple continents.
Canada’s bid was the only official proposal submitted before Wednesday’s deadline to host the 2028 gathering, clearing the way for the country to stage the international event.
Attention now turns to this year’s Francophonie Summit, scheduled to be held in Cambodia later this year, where Prime Minister Carney is expected to participate alongside other leaders from the Francophone community.
