KHARTOUM: At least 15 workers lost their lives after a gold mine collapsed in Sudan’s Northern State on Monday, while another miner was injured, according to the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company.
The accident occurred at the Mohamed Tawfiq gold mine in the Samna area of Wadi Halfa, where rescue teams and local authorities were quickly deployed to recover victims and assist survivors.
Officials said the mine had previously been declared unsafe and closed due to structural risks. Preliminary findings suggest several miners entered the restricted site despite safety warnings, triggering the deadly collapse.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and review existing safety protocols. Artisanal mining remains a key source of employment and gold production in Sudan, despite persistent concerns over hazardous working conditions.
