Former Israeli Ambassador to the United States Mike Herzog has warned that Israel’s political influence in Washington has weakened significantly during President Donald Trump’s administration, citing a shift in diplomatic dynamics and changing public attitudes in the United States.
In an interview with Israeli radio station 103FM, Herzog said the close personal relationship once associated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump no longer appears as strong as it once was. While recent meetings between the two leaders have been publicly described in positive terms, Herzog suggested that the interactions reflected a more restrained diplomatic atmosphere.
According to the former ambassador, the meeting lacked several traditional indicators of a close strategic partnership, including extensive media attention and private discussions between the two leaders. He said the limited public profile of the visit suggested Washington was being cautious about appearing overly aligned with Netanyahu at a politically sensitive time.
Herzog also argued that Israel’s ability to influence U.S. policymaking has declined, particularly as debates surrounding the conflict with Iran and the ongoing war in Gaza continue to shape American political discourse. He noted that while disagreements between the two governments over Iran remain limited, the broader political environment has become more challenging for Israel.
Beyond diplomatic relations, Herzog expressed concern over Israel’s long-term image in the United States. He attributed the decline to demographic and political changes, evolving public opinion, criticism of Israeli government policies, and the impact of the Gaza conflict on international perceptions.
Recent public opinion data also indicates a shift in American attitudes toward Israel, with surveys showing growing criticism of both the Israeli government and the country’s broader image. Herzog warned that rebuilding trust and influence in Washington may require sustained diplomatic engagement and a reassessment of Israel’s international strategy.
