Wildfires Spread Across Corfu and Mainland Greece

Greece Battles New Wildfires as Evacuation Alerts Issued

Wildfires broke out on the Greek island of Corfu and in several mainland areas Tuesday, despite authorities assessing the overall wildfire danger as lower than in previous days.

According to Greek media, a fire was spreading through forests and farmland near the village of Temploni in northern Corfu. Seven water-bombing aircraft were deployed to support around 20 firefighters and five fire engines working to contain the blaze.

Civil protection authorities issued an emergency warning to residents in the affected area, advising them to remain prepared in case an evacuation becomes necessary.

Another wildfire was reported near the town of Thebes, northwest of Athens, where three aircraft were sent to assist firefighters on the ground. Fires were also reported near Palaiochori in western Athens and around Komara in the northeastern Evros region near the Turkish border.

Authorities have placed the entire country at level two on Greece’s five-level wildfire danger scale for Wednesday.

Meanwhile, two people were discovered dead in a forested area of Peristeria on the island of Salamina, where a wildfire had erupted on Sunday.
