Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on US goods worth CAN$27.6 billion, further intensifying the trade conflict between the two neighboring countries. The measures came into force early Tuesday after bilateral trade negotiations broke down in late August.
Ottawa has introduced tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on American imports, affecting major sectors such as steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural machinery, pulp and paper, and electronics. The Canadian measures correspond to the US tariffs on Canadian products on a dollar-for-dollar basis.
The dispute escalated after US President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on several Canadian goods, including steel, aluminum, lumber and automotive components. Canada clarified that its counter-tariffs apply only to goods originating in the US and exclude shipments that were already in transit when the measures began.
Trade tensions have grown through repeated rounds of tariffs and countermeasures. Trump has frequently criticized the trade imbalance between the two countries and has cited it as a major reason for imposing tariffs on Canadian imports.
