A US congressman has warned Britain of possible economic retaliation if the UK proceeds with plans to stop trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Florida Republican Congressman Randy Fine said British companies could face serious financial consequences under Florida’s anti-boycott laws, which penalize businesses that refuse to deal with Israel.
Fine strongly criticized the reported British measures and argued that companies complying with a boycott could face significant penalties in Florida. He pointed to Airbnb as an earlier example, claiming the company changed its policy on listings in occupied territories after concerns over potential penalties under Florida’s anti-boycott regulations.
The warning comes as British media report that the UK is preparing restrictions on trade with illegal Israeli settlements. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has criticized the expansion of settlements and said London would introduce comprehensive measures.
The proposed British action has also provoked a response from Israeli officials. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for Israel to recognize the Falkland Islands as Argentine territory, while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich demanded the expulsion of the British ambassador.
