AFP Demands Safe Evacuation of Starving Journalists in Gaza
By Global Media Desk | July 22, 2025
Agence France-Presse (AFP) plans to evacuate its Gaza-based journalists who face severe food shortages and worsening conditions.
The agency has urged Israel to allow immediate safe passage for reporters and their families trapped inside the war-torn enclave.
“Our teams are starving. They are exhausted. This is now a survival crisis,” said AFP’s Global News Director.
The journalists have no access to clean water, food, or medicine. Conditions continue to deteriorate due to ongoing Israeli strikes and strict border closures.
AFP called on the international community to help. It reminded Israel of its duty to protect media personnel under international humanitarian law.
“Journalists must not be punished for doing their jobs,” said a senior AFP representative.
Aid agencies warn that starvation in Gaza has outpaced injuries. Many media workers now sleep in damaged buildings without electricity or supplies.
Media unions and freedom-of-press groups across Europe and the Middle East have backed AFP’s call. They stressed the need to protect journalists in active war zones.
Other major networks have also scaled back operations in Gaza due to safety risks and supply shortages.
AFP reaffirmed its commitment to reporting from conflict areas but said no story is worth a life. The agency will continue coverage remotely until evacuations are possible.
