Swedish Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson has been given the task of exploring the formation of a new government following the country’s September 13 parliamentary election.
Parliament Speaker Andreas Norlén assigned Andersson the mandate after meeting representatives of Sweden’s political parties. He said the discussions indicated that Andersson should receive the first opportunity to explore whether a government could gain sufficient parliamentary support.
The process began after Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stepped down following the election results, which gave the centre-left bloc a narrow parliamentary majority.
Andersson accepted the assignment and said she would approach the negotiations constructively. She stated that she wanted to lead Sweden in a new spirit of cooperation and work toward broader political collaboration.
The Social Democratic leader had earlier indicated that she intended to hold discussions with other party leaders as part of efforts to establish a workable government. However, differences among the parties could make negotiations complicated.
The newly elected Swedish parliament is scheduled to meet on September 28 and elect a new speaker. The next stage of the government formation process will then be determined, with a new prime minister potentially being proposed from September 29 onward
