Bahrain Urges UN Action Over Iran Threats to Strait of Hormuz
Draft Resolution Calls for Strong Global Response
Hamilton, Canada
Bahrain has called on the UN Security Council to take urgent action over Iran’s threats to restrict navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, warning of serious risks to global trade and economic stability.
Resolution Submitted to Security Council
During a Council session on cooperation between the UN and the Gulf Cooperation Council, Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani confirmed that Bahrain had submitted a draft resolution addressing the situation. A vote on the proposal is expected soon.
He emphasized that the draft follows international law and urged the Council to deliver a firm and united response. Bahrain, which holds the rotating presidency of the Council this month, aims to build consensus among member states.
Threats to Global Trade and Security
Al-Zayani warned that any disruption to shipping through the strait could have far-reaching consequences. In particular, he stressed that such actions could damage energy security, disrupt food supplies, and weaken global trade systems.
He also welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2817, noting that it highlights the serious global risks linked to instability in this critical waterway.
Concerns Over Regional Attacks
Furthermore, the minister condemned what he described as unlawful missile and drone attacks by Iran on Gulf countries and Jordan. He stated that these strikes targeted civilian infrastructure, including airports, ports, energy facilities, and residential areas, leading to significant damage and loss of life.
Call for International Cooperation
In conclusion, Al-Zayani reaffirmed Bahrain’s commitment to multilateral cooperation. He stressed that lasting peace and stability depend on strong international partnerships built on shared values such as cooperation, security, and mutual respect.
