BSEC Chief: Economic Cooperation Vital for Regional Peace and Stability

Lazar Comanescu urges open trade and dialogue to strengthen security at Antalya Diplomacy Forum

Antalya, April 15, 2025 — The Secretary General of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), Lazar Comanescu, has underscored the critical link between economic cooperation and regional security, stating that stronger economic ties can serve as a pathway to peace and stability.

Speaking at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF), Comanescu highlighted the growing need for continuous dialogue and open trade, especially during periods of geopolitical tension. “Security has a vital economic dimension,” he told Anadolu Agency, the event’s global communication partner. “Enhancing economic cooperation inherently strengthens security.”

Comanescu reflected on BSEC’s 33-year history, founded to promote regional economic collaboration, and expressed appreciation for Türkiye’s leadership in the organization. He praised Türkiye’s 2023 chairmanship for overseeing the unanimous adoption of a 10-year revised economic agenda aimed at fostering long-term cooperation and resilience.

“The revised agenda shows a forward-looking mindset — planning not just for today, but for the future,” he stated, adding that “a secure and stable region is only possible through ongoing cooperation.”

During a panel on global connectivity, Comanescu applauded the ADF’s structure and topics, calling it “one of the top global platforms” for diplomacy and collaboration. He emphasized the importance of ensuring smooth connectivity between world regions to foster inclusive growth.

Turning to global trade, Comanescu voiced concern over rising protectionist trends, advocating for “active trade exchanges with minimal barriers.” He warned that limiting trade hampers cooperation and growth in an already complex geopolitical landscape.

“In the current era of digital transformation, limited resources, and multipolarity, dialogue is the only viable way forward,” he added, expressing optimism about resolving disputes between protectionist and free trade approaches.

Comanescu concluded by reaffirming BSEC’s mission: “We exist to build economic bridges. I hope ongoing tensions in the region can be resolved through constructive negotiations and mutual respect.”

This message resonates strongly as BSEC continues to push for sustainable economic growth and political stability across the Black Sea region.
