MONTREAL — Canada and the European Union have concluded a significant two-day summit in Montreal, announcing a new partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation and building a more resilient future.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa unveiled the initiative on Friday as the summit came to an end.
The leaders also discussed the possibility of granting Canada associate member status within the European Union. However, the proposal has faced resistance from several EU member states, including Germany.
Speaking at the closing news conference, Carney said the discussions marked progress towards closer relations between Canada and the EU, alongside the launch of their new strategic alliance.
In a joint seven-page statement, both sides outlined plans to expand industrial cooperation, strengthen supply chain integration and advance several existing joint projects. The agreement reflects their shared ambition to deepen economic and strategic ties in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
