France Opens 83 Police Misconduct Investigations

French Students Plan More Demonstrations Amid Tensions

French authorities have launched 83 investigations into alleged misconduct by police officers and gendarmes since the beginning of the nationwide high school protest movement, broadcaster Franceinfo reported Friday.

The cases have been referred to the General Inspectorate of the National Police and the General Inspectorate of the National Gendarmerie, the two institutions responsible for examining complaints and investigating the conduct of their respective forces.

The investigations come amid student demonstrations and school blockades organized across France as part of the growing protest movement. The reported figure includes cases submitted to both inspectorates since the demonstrations began.

Despite government concessions concerning education funding, staffing and university admissions, further nationwide protests are scheduled for Saturday.

Meanwhile, Paris authorities have reinstated a limited nighttime curfew during the All Saints’ Day holiday weekend, according to French newspaper Le Parisien.

The restrictions will be enforced between 11 pm and 6 am local time on the nights of October 31 to November 1 and November 1 to 2. They will cover the central pedestrian zone around Place de la Republique and the area surrounding Canopee des Halles.

Residents living within or close to the restricted zones will be exempt if they can provide proof of residence. The exemptions will also cover workers who need to pass through the affected areas and public service employees.

The curfew has been reintroduced after earlier restrictions imposed following violence and looting during the October 17–18 demonstrations were lifted earlier this week.
