Canada Reaffirms Commitment to NATO and Its Evolution
Hamilton, Canada, 09 April 2026 – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday reaffirmed the country’s strong commitment to NATO and pledged to continue supporting the alliance’s evolution.
NATO Commitment and Defense Spending
Speaking to reporters in Quebec, Carney stated, “What we are at the core is: We’re a strong NATO member. We’re going to continue to support its evolution.” He highlighted that Canada recently fulfilled its NATO defense spending obligations, reaching the 2% GDP target for the first time since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Carney emphasized that financial contributions are secondary to the alliance’s main goal: protecting Canadians.
Strengthening Ties with Key Partners
To enhance national security, Canada is deepening cooperation with select NATO members, including Nordic countries, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany. Carney said these efforts aim to provide greater protection for Canada’s Arctic region and ensure integrated defense measures.
He described these initiatives as part of NATO’s broader contribution to Canada’s security, calling the approach “robust” and adaptable to the alliance’s evolving structure.
