UN Envoy Visits US-Israeli Strike Sites in Tehran
Istanbul, 09 April 2026 – UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Middle East, Jean Arnault, visited Tehran sites recently targeted by US-Israeli attacks, according to the Iranian Red Crescent Society.
Site Visits and Meetings
Arnault toured Resalat Square and Sharif University, both reportedly hit during the strikes. He was accompanied by Iranian Red Crescent chief Pirhossein Kolivand. During his visit, Arnault also held a meeting and press briefing at the Red Crescent headquarters and later met with the organization’s president to discuss the humanitarian situation.
Remarks on Humanitarian Impact
The envoy described the attack on a girls’ school in Minab as an event that “will be recorded in world history.” He praised the Red Crescent’s efforts, emphasizing that “the world hears your voice” and commended humanitarian workers for operating under difficult and dangerous conditions. Arnault also noted the widespread international condemnation of the attacks and the severe consequences of the conflict.
Targeted Locations and Casualties
The Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab, southern Hormozgan province, was struck on 28 February. Iranian authorities report 156 fatalities, including 120 students—73 boys and 47 girls—and 26 female teachers.
Additionally, a US-Israeli strike damaged a data center at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, which supports Iran’s artificial intelligence platform and thousands of digital services. University President Masoud Tehranchi condemned the attack, calling it “damage caused by the brutality of the enemies of this land.”
Since 28 February, more than 3,000 people have been killed across Iran in US-Israeli attacks, according to the country’s Forensic Authority. About 40% of the bodies were initially unidentifiable.
