Canada PM Says Military Role in Iran War Cannot Be Ruled Out
CANBERRA — Mark Carney, prime minister of Canada, said his country cannot completely rule out possible military involvement in the growing conflict in the Middle East. However, he stressed that the situation remains uncertain and largely hypothetical.
Carney made the remarks while speaking alongside Anthony Albanese, prime minister of Australia, during a visit to Canberra.
Canada leaves door open to possible involvement
When reporters asked whether Canada could join the conflict, Carney said it is impossible to fully rule out any future scenario.
He explained that Canada will continue to support its allies while ensuring the protection of Canadian citizens.
At the same time, Carney described the question as hypothetical and avoided suggesting that Canada plans to take immediate military action.
Concerns over legality of attacks
Earlier, Carney also expressed concerns about the recent strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran.
According to Carney, the attacks appear to be inconsistent with international law at first glance. He noted that the strikes happened without consultation with several allies, including Canada.
In addition, he said the United States and Israel did not involve the United Nations before launching the operation.
Canada not informed in advance
Carney confirmed that Canada did not receive prior notice about the military action. He said neither Washington nor Tel Aviv asked Ottawa to participate.
Despite these concerns, the Canadian leader said he supports the strikes with some regret. He described the situation as part of a broader shift in the global order.
Call for restraint and respect for international rules
Carney also condemned attacks that harm civilians and urged all parties involved in the conflict to respect international rules.
Furthermore, he called on countries engaged in the conflict to follow established standards of international engagement in order to prevent further escalation.
