Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Donald Trump on his U.S. presidential victory, emphasizing the importance of both countries finding the “right way to get along.” Xi called for stable and sustainable China-U.S. relations that serve the interests of both nations, with mutual respect and peaceful co-existence. He also highlighted the need for increased dialogue to manage differences effectively.
Tensions between China and the U.S. had reached a low point due to disputes over trade, security, and Taiwan, but relations began to improve after Xi and President Joe Biden met in California in November 2023. Trump’s victory could reignite issues from his first term, particularly concerning trade, as he has promised to impose stiff tariffs, potentially restarting the trade war that began in 2018.
China expressed willingness to develop healthy economic and trade ties with the U.S., despite the threat of increased tariffs under Trump’s second presidency. The Chinese government reiterated its hope for a pragmatic approach to bilateral relations, acknowledging the challenges but suggesting that cooperation could be beneficial for both countries.
