Judge Dismisses Trump Defamation Case Against Wall Street Journal
Court Rejects Lawsuit Over Insufficient Evidence
A federal judge in Florida has dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by Donald Trump against The Wall Street Journal over a controversial report linked to Jeffrey Epstein.
Darrin Gayles ruled that Trump’s complaint failed to meet the legal requirement known as “actual malice.” This standard requires proof that the publication knowingly shared false information or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.
Judge Cites Lack of Proof
In his decision, the judge stated that the newspaper took reasonable steps to verify its report. He noted that journalists contacted Trump, the Justice Department, and the FBI before publishing the story.
Trump denied the allegations, while the other agencies did not provide comments. Additionally, the newspaper reviewed the material referenced in the report.
As a result, the judge concluded that Trump’s claims lacked sufficient evidence to prove wrongdoing by the publication.
Background of the Dispute
The lawsuit followed a report about a 2003 birthday album allegedly linked to Epstein. The article suggested that the album contained a card associated with Trump, including a drawing and a typed message.
However, Trump denied any connection to the card and claimed the report was fabricated. His legal team argued that the newspaper published false information.
Case Dismissed Without Final Judgment
Although the court dismissed the case, it did not decide whether the claims in the article were true or false. Instead, the judge focused only on the legal standard required for defamation cases.
He dismissed the lawsuit “without prejudice,” which allows Trump to file a revised complaint within a limited time.
Reactions from Both Sides
Trump’s legal team announced plans to refile the case, stating that they intend to hold media organizations accountable.
Meanwhile, the publisher of The Wall Street Journal defended its reporting and welcomed the court’s decision, emphasizing its commitment to accuracy and responsible journalism.
Context of Trump and Epstein Relationship
Trump and Epstein had social connections in the past, which ended in the early 2000s. Trump later distanced himself from Epstein and criticized him publicly.
Epstein, a wealthy financier, faced serious criminal charges and died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial. Authorities have linked him to abuse involving many victims.
Importantly, Trump has not faced any criminal charges related to Epstein and continues to deny any wrongdoing.
