Dominican Republic became the latest nation to sign the Artemis Accords, joining 43 other countries in a commitment to advancing the safe, transparent, and responsible exploration of space, including missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Ambassador Sonia Guzmán signed the accords on behalf of the Dominican Republic, marking a significant step in the nation’s collaboration with NASA and other space-faring nations.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson welcomed the Dominican Republic’s participation, stating, “NASA is proud to welcome the Dominican Republic’s signing of the Artemis Accords as we expand the peaceful exploration of space to all nations.” Guzmán emphasized that the agreement represents not only a scientific and technological milestone but also an opportunity for the Dominican Republic to contribute to global goals of peace, sustainability, and innovation in space.
The Dominican Republic will also participate in a high-level meeting of Artemis Accords signatories during the International Astronautical Congress in Milan on October 14, 2024, where discussions will focus on furthering the implementation of the accords’ principles. Originally signed by the U.S. and seven other nations in 2020, the Artemis Accords promote responsible behavior in space exploration, grounded in the Outer Space Treaty and other international agreements. More countries are expected to join the initiative in the coming months.–News Desk
