Erdogan Calls Biden’s Gaza Ceasefire Push Important

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed support for U.S. President Joe Biden’s call for a ceasefire in Gaza, acknowledging that while the move is long overdue, it is nonetheless a crucial step. During a joint press conference with the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Erdogan emphasized the importance of a just and lasting ceasefire to achieve regional and global peace. He reiterated Turkey’s readiness to facilitate peace efforts in Gaza, stating that the country would continue to work as mediators or guarantors to end the violence.

Biden had earlier announced that the U.S. would intensify efforts with regional partners, including Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and Israel, to broker a ceasefire and facilitate a hostage exchange. This push comes amid ongoing violence in Gaza, where Israel’s actions since the October 7 Hamas attacks have resulted in the deaths of more than 44,000 Palestinians. Erdogan pointed out Turkey’s ongoing efforts to counter Israel’s actions and stressed the need for the Muslim world to respond with concrete, collective actions.

Additionally, Erdogan highlighted the strengthening of Turkey’s bilateral ties with Oman. He noted that the Sultan of Oman’s visit marked a significant milestone, as it was the first official state visit at the presidential level from Oman to Turkey. Erdogan mentioned plans to visit Oman in the near future to further enhance diplomatic and economic relations. Both nations have signed multiple agreements in various sectors, including healthcare, culture, and energy, with a particular focus on boosting economic cooperation. The Turkish president also emphasized the potential for greater collaboration in Oman’s Vision 2040 development plan.
