EU socialists criticize von der Leyen remarks on international law
Lawmakers warn comments could weaken global rules
The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the European Parliament criticized comments made by Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, and warned that questioning the role of international law could damage global stability.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the group said Europe must continue to support the current international legal system. The lawmakers described von der Leyen’s remarks that Europe can no longer act as a guardian of the existing international order as unacceptable.
Call for clarification from EU leadership
The S&D group stressed that international law already faces serious pressure. Therefore, it warned that questioning its importance sends a dangerous message to actors who seek to weaken global rules.
According to the statement, such remarks require immediate clarification. The lawmakers urged European leaders to reaffirm their commitment to the international legal system.
Conflicts increasing pressure on international law
The group also pointed to several major conflicts that have placed stress on global legal norms. These include Russian invasion of Ukraine, the ongoing destruction in Gaza Strip, and the conflict involving Iran following military actions by United States and Israel.
Lawmakers argued that these crises challenge the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter and place international legal norms under severe strain.
Debate intensifies after von der Leyen speech
Earlier in the day, von der Leyen addressed lawmakers and repeated her stance that there should be “no tears shed” for Iran, which has faced attacks since late February. She accused the Iranian government of decades of repression against its own people.
However, the S&D group insisted that Europe must remain firmly committed to international law. It said the rules-based system forms the foundation of peace, security and cooperation between nations.
Concerns about selective application of international law
The lawmakers also warned against applying international law selectively. They argued that Europe cannot strongly criticize Vladimir Putin for violating international law in Ukraine while staying silent when Donald Trump or Benjamin Netanyahu ignore the same principles.
According to the statement, selective enforcement weakens the credibility of global institutions.
Warning over military action without UN approval
Finally, the group said military operations conducted without approval from the United Nations risk increasing instability in the Middle East. Lawmakers warned that such actions could undermine international norms designed to protect civilians and maintain global security.
