With Donald Trump’s re-election, Europe’s leaders are now focused on the implications for the continent. Many are concerned about the future of US-Ukraine relations, especially regarding military aid. Ukraine’s President Zelensky is in Budapest for a summit to urge European leaders to remain committed to supporting Kyiv, as the US has been its largest donor. Trump, who has previously claimed he could end the war with Russia in a day, has cast doubt on his stance towards Ukraine’s victory.
Zelensky’s visit also highlights the uncertainties surrounding European support for Ukraine, particularly with Germany’s leadership in flux and Hungary’s pro-Trump Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, expressing skepticism about continued military aid. Orban, who has close ties with Moscow, has opposed sanctions on Russia and called for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
Despite concerns, many European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, have pledged ongoing support for Ukraine. However, with Trump’s isolationist policies, Europe is worried about the future of NATO, security, and trade relations. Trump’s protectionist stance, particularly on tariffs, could harm Europe’s already struggling economies.
Additionally, Europe fears Trump’s America First approach could weaken EU unity, with countries like Hungary and Slovakia aligning with him, potentially creating divisions within the bloc. Despite these fears, some believe that Trump’s presence could strengthen European unity, much like Brexit did. However, there are concerns that his success might empower right-wing populists across Europe who share his nationalist views and demand change.
