The Chief of Staff to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Tzachi Braverman, is under investigation by Israeli police for allegedly altering documents related to the October 7 Hamas attack to portray Netanyahu more favorably. Braverman, a close advisor to the prime minister, was questioned for over five hours by the Lahav 433 major crimes unit. The investigation centers on the timing of two phone calls Netanyahu received during the attack.
Braverman is accused of changing the timestamp on a call from Netanyahu’s military secretary, Major General Avi Gil, from 06:40 to 06:29, to make it appear as though Netanyahu had acted more urgently. Although Braverman insists that the change was to correct the time based on his understanding, the suspicion is that he altered the record to show Netanyahu responded more decisively to the attack.
The October 7 raid, which was Israel’s largest military and intelligence failure, has already led to several military resignations. Netanyahu faces growing criticism for his role in failing to prevent the attack, though he denies any personal fault. This investigation adds to Netanyahu’s legal challenges, as he is currently on trial for corruption, which further complicates his political standing.
