Europe Pushes for Ukraine Peace | Leaders Seek U.S. Security Pledge

Starmer Unites Allies for Defense Plan Amid Rising Tensions

March 2, 2025 – European leaders have agreed to draft a comprehensive Ukraine peace proposal aimed at securing Washington’s commitment to Kyiv’s defense. The initiative, spearheaded by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, aims to present a unified European strategy to the United States, reinforcing security guarantees essential to deterring Russian aggression.

During a high-profile summit in London, held shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s tense exchange with U.S. President Donald Trump, European leaders reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine. A key focus was strengthening Europe’s own defense capabilities to demonstrate self-reliance, a move intended to align with Trump’s expectations for NATO allies.

Starmer announced that Britain would allocate £1.6 billion in export financing for Ukraine to procure over 5,000 air defense missiles. He also emphasized that the UK, France, and other key nations—forming a “coalition of the willing”—would draft a peace plan for Trump’s consideration.

With growing concerns that the U.S. might push a Russia-brokered peace deal, Europe is working to ensure Kyiv remains central to negotiations. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the urgency of increased defense investment, calling for fiscal flexibility to enable a surge in military spending. She emphasized making Ukraine a “steel porcupine”—impenetrable to potential aggressors.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reinforced the need for greater European responsibility in NATO, advocating for expanded defense budgets while maintaining strong ties with the U.S.

As geopolitical tensions mount, Europe’s proactive approach signals its determination to safeguard Ukraine’s sovereignty while strengthening transatlantic alliances.
